The solar photovoltaic system has a capacity of generating 5Kw of electrical power per day. There are 12 panels installed which can generate up to 3Kw per day. More panels can be added as required, up to a maximum of 18. Power generated during the day but not utilized for day usage will get back into the Eskom grid. Once the "credit" from the unused solar is used up, then normal Eskom tariffs apply, and the system draws on normal power like any other house. There is no battery installed at present however the system is compatible and can be added later as required. Average monthly electricity spend is approximately R800 in summer and R1600 in winter.

The 300-litre solar geyser cylinder circulates hot water in a circular loop throughout the ceilings in insulated pipes. This water is circulated by two small electric circulation pumps. When hot water is required, the opened tap will have immediate access to hot water. It doesn't have to travel all the way from the main unit in the garage roof. This water is heated in two ways - by solar panels (x2) which are above the garage and assist with heating during the day. To assist the solar panels, there is a 5KW heat pump which heats the water after hours or on overcast days. This is 30% more economical than using pure electricity to heat the water. The system does NOT have a heating element, so it is only heated by the pump or the sun. The capacity is sufficient for a fully occupied 4-bedroom house and guest flat.
